Sustaining breastfeeding, something I have not accomplished with my first two children. I am hoping I will be able to with my third. The wonderful benefits of breastfeeding should be able to empower me, even if I lack adequate knowledge, lack support and get discouraged easily.
It’s nice to have a friend who’s also pregnant with her first baby and who’s bent on acquiring all the information she could get by taking advantage of the classes and seminars offered nowadays. I wouldn’t be informed of these events if it wasn’t for her.
Sustaining breastfeeding was the topic of a talk I attended with her in Mothercare, Greenbelt, in the afternoon after I went to the babywearing meet. It was organized by La Leche League Manila. The meeting was more on the sharing of experiences by the other moms and how they sustain breastfeeding. Some points I need to keep in mind are:
• Don’t buy formula because I will only be tempted to give this to my baby
• My breastmilk will be enough for my newborn’s almond-sized tummy
• Having a C-section is not an excuse not to breastfeed, I saw an online article that’s helpful
• The more I give my breasts to my baby, the more they will produce milk
• Even if the nipples become sore, I shouldn’t stop
• Even if my baby’s teething and biting, I shouldn’t stop. Babies can be taught not to bite, as shared by Mommy Paola of Mommy Treats
• There are also supplements like Pro-Lacta to help breastfeeding moms produce more milk
• Being stressed and pressured could hinder breastmilk production
• It’s OK if my baby doesn’t poop for several days while exclusively breastfeeding because breastmilk is fully absorbed, it’s not constipation when finally the poop comes out soft
I sure hope I could follow through and breastfeed my third baby for a year or two. I’d need to talk with my OB and the pediatrician. If I did sustain breastfeeding, I would really need a baby sling.
Oh, and since I was at Mothercare, hubby and I decided to buy a pair of shoes for baby Caleb, as shown in the photo above.
