The Hearts We Mend by Kathryn Springer, Cymplified!

May 23, 2016 by ceemee

Mothers have specific seasons in their lives. In my life, it’s the season of school-aged children, whom I am continually teaching, molding, guiding and lifting up to the Lord in prayer. In the book The Hearts We Mend by Kathryn Springer, the heroine, Evie’s season was something I have yet to experience. I know I will experience it in the future – her grown-up son getting married and leaving her nest. Reading about it is one of way of gaining insight.

God meets us in our messes.

That’s what I was thinking while I was reading this book. Most of us are under circumstances or have experiences that hinder us from moving forward and stepping out in faith. The Hearts We Mend remind me to always trust God, pray for others and over everything happening in my life – both the good and the challenging.

I found the story captivating and romantic, even if the characters were under unconventional circumstances. By unconventional, I mean Evie was already in her late thirties and already a widow. I think that’s good, though, since it deviated from the usual young and curvaceous heroines.

What I disliked was that many supporting characters were introduced and I kind of had a difficult time keeping track of who’s who. But, i guess that’s how it was since it’s about living in a community. There were also a few errors, like the inconsistent spelling of the name Deirdre and a few sentences that don’t make sense.

I would recommend it to anyone who wants a slightly different story and one that inspires in the spiritual aspect.

For young widow Evie Bennett, moving forward will mean deciding what to leave behind . . . and what to keep.

Widowed at the age of twenty-five when her firefighter husband was killed in the line of duty, Evie Bennett has spent the last thirteen years raising their son, Cody, in the close-knit community of Banister Falls. As the women’s ministry director of her church, Evie encourages women to boldly pursue God’s plan for their future . . . while she is content with her memories of the past. But Evie’s well-ordered life begins to change when she meets Jack Vale.

As Evie gets drawn into Jack’s world—a world that isn’t as safe and predictable as the one she’s worked so hard to create—he challenges her to open her eyes to the problems in the community . . . but will Evie open her heart to love again?

Because even though Jack isn’t anything like her late husband, he just might be everything she needs.
