Review:
Setting the backdrop and landscape of the story is very important in the first book. The Kingdom of Soron was described beautifully, especially the enchanting sunsets. I could vividly imagine what the kingdom looks like. I admire the way the author used words to paint pictures of the story’s scenes.
The lead character reminds me of Disney’s Princess Merida, but with dark brown hair and green eyes instead. Like her, she also doesn’t want to be betrothed. Both of them value their freedom and have a thirst for adventure. The father, the king, like any other parent, is often misunderstood by his child. Of course he wants what’s best for Madeline and also what’s proper for the kingdom, but imposing it without explanation couldn’t be graciously accepted by his daughter. He does love her but he also seemed aloof, because of the heartbreaking reason stated in the beginning.
I felt like I was reading a historical romance novel, though, minus the censored scenes. There were the subject of betrothal, deaths, Princess Madeline was in awful situations and lovey dovey moments. It didn’t seem like this book is for middle grade kids. Although, the lesson was. I would like my kids to learn that being on their own and literally choosing their own adventures aren’t what they were cracked up to be. Yes, freedom has a price, and that is responsibility.
This is a fast-paced and action-packed book that I would recommend someone who wants a taste of adventure and likes fairy tales.
