Looking in the mirror, I could pinpoint a hundred things that I dislike about the way I look, that possibly only I can see. Being fed with the world’s standard of beauty, I need a paradigm shift in self-imagery. And this could help me on my journey to self-acceptance.
One of the ways I could obtain confidence is to accept that I am beautiful. God wouldn’t make anyone and anything which is not beautiful. I believe that true beauty exudes from within. Our attitude towards beauty must come from our mentality and consciousness to see the positive.
These are my three practical ways on making the effort to be beautiful:
- Be beautiful in mind. I have learned that changing my attitude means changing my frame of mind. Each day, I find the things I do like about myself and focus on them. I revel in my husband and our children’s affections and internalize the words when my eldest tells me I’m pretty. When someone says something negative about how I look, I keep in mind that only what I think about myself matters.
- Be beautiful in spirit. There’s nothing more beautiful than a fulfilled woman shining with contentment and joy. I aim to be fulfilled by living out my purpose in life, doing what I love to do and at the same time encouraging other people, especially moms and children. I love writing and I feel accomplished whenever I publish posts that I really put my heart into, that voice out my beliefs and that (hopefully) touch someone’s life. Even if they are just baby steps, I am taking them towards achieving my goals and dreams.
- Be beautiful in body. After finding the things that I like about myself, I enhance them subtly. Like my eyes, I do away with eyeglasses when I go out and use coloured contact lenses to make them look bigger. I am accepting the fact that my body changed after having three kids, realising the reasons why I should love my body more and then, I shop for clothes that will flatter my present body shape. It’s the outfit that should fit me well, and not my body forced to fit into a trend. Oh, and being healthy helps a lot. A healthy body is a beautiful body.
Indeed, we are our own worst critics. @doveph says: You are more beautiful than you think. I agree!

for me, as long as you think you are beautiful, you will be. Just like christina’s song, you are beautiful no matter what you say…

And as they say, a beautiful heart would always make a person shine, no matter how ordinary looking one is or even having too many physical flaws. Beauty that is skin deep is easily lost. I guess, it’s more of working with what you have, rather than trying to look drop-dead gorgeous like those models. 🙂

Being beautiful inside is what really matters most. It is more lasting too and such beauty radiates from the outside 🙂
